The Vyshyvanka is a traditional embroidered Ukrainian shirt worn by both men and women. Embroidery was very popular in ancient times, with the first embroidery school being opened in the 11th century. But archeological finds demonstrate that vyshyvankas were worn even as far back as in the 6th century BC. Since the 19th century but these days, vyshyvankas are far more than fancy tops. For many Ukrainians, these shirts are a way to show their Ukrainian identity or to make a political statement when the country lives through a difficult time. Many Euromaidan protesters in 2013-2014 wore vyshyvankas.
